Disney Book Review: The North Line Shows the Dangers of the Bering Sea
A young man finds danger and adventure in The North Line, a new book by Matt Riordan. After a bout with the law and no way to pay for his college tuition, Adam finds himself on board a fishing boat in the Bering Sea, fishing for herring. Completely green (a novice at fishing) Adam embarks on the trip with seasoned fisherman Cole and Nash. Adam quickly realizes that fishing is dangerous and a new deckhand like himself can get maimed or killed. Adam doesn’t have the luxury of going home when he feels like quitting, he has a $26,000 debt to pay.

Emeshed with a small hardened but determined crew, Adam finds camaraderie with men whom he would normally not interact with in his college town. At times Adam isn’t sure if the violence will come from fishermen or the violence itself and his struggle for survival coincides with finding how who he truly is.
“The North Line” is simply a captivating tale that had me glued to the pages, feeling the tension and uncertainty alongside the protagonist, Adam. As a kid who had never worked on a boat, Adam’s journey into the world of experienced fishermen is gripping from start to finish. The author, Matt Riordan, brings authenticity to the story, drawing from his own experiences to vividly detail the dangers and challenges of fishing on the unforgiving Bering Sea. I ended up having to look up certain terms and words because I wasn’t sure what they related to on the boat but it wasn’t a big deal.
With each page, Riordan’s descriptions in “The North Line” give a stunning picture of the harsh realities faced by those who brave the waters for a large bounty and cash payment. He immerses readers in the bone-chilling cold, unexpected fires, the relentless waves, and the constant threat of danger. Through his vivid storytelling, Riordan captures the essence of life at sea, delivering a compelling story for young adults.
