‘No One Will Save You’ Serves Up a Career-Defining Performance from Kaitlyn Dever

In the film No One Will Save You, a young woman named Brynn is introduced as the town pariah.  She lives on the edge of her small town cut off from the entire community, which relishes in shunning her.  Brynn exists by sewing dresses that she sells online, collecting miniature houses, and writing letters to someone named Maude.

One night Brynn senses something is off and hears a bang which she shrugs off as some sort of wild animal that has gotten into her trash, but the reality is much worse.  An alien invasion has taken place and Brynn encounters one which kicks off a tense film about survival and what constitutes an individual’s happy ending.

The movie sticks to just a few sets, the most foreboding being Brynn’s empty home.  Brynn is able to hide and fight back against the aliens in her home, in a sequence of really violent and physical scenes. When she encounters other community members, it’s clear that the aliens have taken over their bodies and minds. Brynn’s horror and determination to survive is never in question making the reason why the entire town has shunned her a gut punch to the viewer.

Written and directed by Brian Duffield, the film No One Will Save You is clearly inspired by M. Night Shaymalan’s Signs and Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  The dialogue in the film is sparse, in fact, I think about five words are uttered in the entire movie.  Despite this, actress Kaitlyn Dever is phenomenal as the character Brynn. Viewers are never confused about what she is feeling, whether it’s fear or anger, because of Dever’s emotive face and acting skills.  Kaitlyn Dever is unique and this is her career-defining performance as Brynn.

No One Will Save You forces viewers to contend with the question can you still root for someone who has done a terrible thing?  Does Brynn even deserve to live after her past deed is revealed?  Does an alien invasion wipe away the tragic circumstances in which a member of a community is pushed out?  The film No One Will Save You explores all of this and more with a compelling main character and some pretty gnarly aliens.
