The six-episode series of healthcare capers introduces extraordinary characters who need Baymax’s signature approach to healing in more ways than they realize.

BAYMAX! Review

In the Disney Plus BAYMAX! shorts, Baymax roams the streets of San Fransokyo, helping his community with their health.  The first short “Kiko” touches on the prison that grief can be when an older woman refuses Baymax’s help with swimming to help her arthritis.  Annoyed with Baymax, she finally reaches her limit but Baymax with all his patience gets her to open up.  The woman hasn’t stepped foot in the community pool which was a favorite place of her husband who passed away.  Baymax encourages her to swim and allow herself some joy which makes for a silly swim lesson.

In other shorts, Baymax helps a middle schooler who gets her period and another food truck operator who is scared to act on his crush on another local cook.  Both of these shorts tackle taboo topics that should be a part of our regular conversations, but more often than not they aren’t. 

There’s a moment in the short “Sofia” in which Sofia (behind a bathroom stall) yells at Baymax not to listen to her opening a new package of pads and I laughed because women are so ingrained to hide this aspect of their bodies, most of us don’t even want our partners to ever hear the crunching of a package.

One criticism about Disney Plus’ BAYMAX! is that there isn’t a discussion on consent which was surprising.  Baymax follows people and then scans them despite most telling him they don’t want to be scanned.  It seems like Disney missed an opportunity to discuss consent but instead, Baymax completely ignores the privacy concerns of the people he wants to help.

Still, BAYMAX! is an entirely sweet series of shorts that offers a thoughtful take on several taboo subjects.  Baymax should open up interesting conversations around tweens since there might be new subjects presented that kids may not understand or want to talk about more.
