Picture Book Review: Hooray for She, He, Ze, and They!: What Are Your Pronouns Today?

In the book “Hooray for She, He, Ze, and They!,” author Lindz Amer takes readers on a delightful and heartwarming journey into the colorful world of pronouns, exploring the vast spectrum of identities that language can embrace. In a world where everyone has a pronoun, from the familiar hes and shes to the more unique theys, zes, hirs, faes, and pers, this book serves as a gentle and whimsical guide to the art of discovering who you are and what you want to be called.

Through a combination of simple storytelling and playful illustrations, Amer encourages young readers to embark on a personal exploration to find the pronoun that feels like a warm hug. Most of the book reminds readers that pronouns can be used for people to embrace and show off their truest selves.

The narrative not only celebrates the diversity of pronouns but also encourages children to discover their own unique identity and be accepting of others’ chosen pronouns.

Hooray for She, He, Ze and They!” has vibrant illustrations by Kip Alizadeh reminiscent of crayon drawings with diverse-looking characters, I liked that the final illustration has a soothing twilight feeling that matches the comforting prose that it’s ok not to know what your pronouns are.
