In “Beach Hair” the sweet book by Ashley Woodfolk begins with the family waking up with wild bed hair, which Mommy calls “beach hair.” This prompts a spontaneous beach day in which the family loads up their car to head to their local beach- with beach with hats on. The Mom character has tight curly hair, the Dad character has straight hair and the child is a mix of the two. At the beach, they notice all kinds of beach hair: twisty and twirly, flossy and glossy, barely there, and hair that’s everywhere.

Beach Hair” teaches an important lesson about embracing differences, as everyone lets their hair blow free in the wind, feeling a sense of belonging and joy. No matter how different their hair is, everyone is happy and accepted.

The “Beach Hair” illustrations are reminiscent of watercolor paintings and illustrator Nina Mata uses soothing beach colors like yellows and aquas, depicting the joyful atmosphere of the beach day. The pictures help bring the story to life, making readers feel like they are really at the beach, enjoying the sunshine and the ocean breeze.
