What is Moana 2 About?

Moana 2 takes place three years after the events of the first film, following Moana as she embarks on a brand-new journey across the ocean. When she receives an unexpected call from her ancestors, she sets sail into uncharted waters to explore far beyond her home. Along the way, she assembles a diverse crew of seafarers to help her navigate the dangers of the open sea.

Meanwhile, Maui finds himself on his own adventure, facing a new threat tied to the storm god Nalo. As Moana and her crew push forward, they encounter old foes like the Kakamora and form unexpected alliances. The film expands on Polynesian mythology and explores themes of unity and courage. I really love that they expanded on the Polynesian mythology. It was great to see it represented on the screen.

Without giving anything away, their quest ultimately challenges Moana’s leadership and understanding of her people’s heritage as she seeks to reunite the islands and restore balance to the ocean.

Moana is joined by some of our favorite characters (Maui, Pua, Hei Hei) plus some new additions on her quest. The storyline is enjoyable and full of lots of humor we have all come to love from the first film.

A Strong Cast of Fun and Lovable Characters

One of the highlights of Moana 2 is its cast of characters. Moana continues to be an inspiring and courageous leader, and her new crew adds a fresh dynamic to the story. Of course Maui returns with his signature humor and charm. Also, we are introduced to new side characters like Loto and Kele (who accompany Moana on her journey) that bring plenty of laughs and heartfelt moments. Even the mischievous Kakamora (some of my favorites from the original film!) make a fun comeback.

A Weak Soundtrack That Lacks Memorable Songs

While the characters and visuals shine, one major disappointment in Moana 2 is its music. Unlike the first film, which featured unforgettable songs like How Far I’ll Go and You’re Welcome, the sequel’s soundtrack feels underwhelming. The songs are serviceable but lack the same emotional impact and catchiness that made the original so beloved. Overall, it was disappointing for me and I was really hoping for some more fun Moana themed songs.

Final Verdict

Moana 2 is a fun, action-packed adventure with lovable characters and dazzling animation. While the story is engaging and the humor lands well, the forgettable music prevents it from reaching the same heights as the first film. If you’re a fan of Moana and Maui, this sequel is still worth watching—but don’t expect to walk away humming any new tunes.
