Picture Book Review: The Underwearwolf
If your kids like picture books that show epic adventures, then this one is going to be an instant favorite. Read on for a spoiler-free review of The Underwearwolf, a picture book written by Gideon Sterer.

The Underwearwolf is a hilarious, slightly spooky (but not scary) picture book that fully commits to its ridiculous premise, and it really works. The story follows a rule-breaking kid who ignores a very clear warning: do not wear this underwear under a full moon. Of course, he does… and things get wildly out of control from there.
What makes this picture book stand out is its humor. The main character’s logic is peak kid energy, especially when he insists the moon isn’t full (it very obviously is) and refuses to take off the underwear because, well… he can’t just be butt naked outside. That kind of reasoning makes this such a fun read-aloud, with plenty of moments kids will laugh at and adults will appreciate.
The transformation into the “underwearwolf” leads to a chaotic nighttime adventure filled with furry paws, sharp claws, and some seriously funny situations, including encounters in the woods with a wolfpack and a few very uncomfortable wedgies.

The illustrations by Charles Santoso are a huge highlight. They’re expressive, silly, and full of personality. The exaggerated facial expressions and sense of movement really bring the story to life, especially as the main character runs through his neighborhood mid-transformation. You can practically feel the chaos and energy on every page.
Overall, The Underwearwolf is a laugh-out-loud, high-energy picture book that’s perfect for storytime. It’s playful, a little mischievous, and guaranteed to get giggles, making it a great pick for kids who love humor with a slightly spooky (but not scary) twist.
