Set in late-1950s New York City, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel follows Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a seemingly perfect housewife whose life changes overnight when she discovers a talent for stand-up comedy. As she pursues a career in a male-dominated industry, she navigates family expectations, friendships, and the challenges of breaking into comedy.
Why it’s worth watching: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel starts off with Midge losing her husband and then gaining a new comedy career wich was virtually never heard of in the 1950’s. Her character evolves from just a mom and homemaker to a business woman chasing her dreams despite her family and society wanting her to slow down and keep quiet. With witty writing, gorgeous period costumes, memorable characters, and award-winning performances, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is one of the most charming and top shows on Amazon Prime.
Swarm
Created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, Swarm follows Dre, a woman whose obsession with a fictional pop superstar slowly spirals into something much darker. I really enjoyed how they portrayed a young woman who is navigating friendship and an obsession that begins to become detrimental to her entire life. The psychological thriller explores toxic fandom, social media culture, identity, and obsession in increasingly disturbing ways.
Why it’s worth watching: Swarm is unsettling, unpredictable, and unlike anything else on television. Dominique Fishback delivers one of the strongest performances in recent years.
Spider-Noir
Set in 1930s New York City, Spider-Noir follows an aging private investigator who is forced to confront his past life as the city’s only superhero. Inspired by the fan-favorite Marvel Comics character, the series feels like a classic film noir with a darker, detective-focused take on the Spider-Man universe. Nicolas Cage has the lead and his preformance is compelling and believable, despite this being a superhero show.
