In I Need Space, Rocco is a rocket ship exploring the universe, but not everyone he encounters plays by the rules. Between toy-stealers, line-cutters, and roughhousing meteors, Rocco’s patience is pushed to its limit. It’s easy to see how his experiences mirror situations kids face on the playground or during playdates, when other children don’t always follow the rules and frustration starts to build.

I love how this story shows children that it’s okay to need a little space. For kids who feel overwhelmed or overstimulated, stepping away for a few peaceful minutes can make such a difference. Sometimes, kids just need to take a breath, gather themself, and give their minds a chance to reset before jumping back into the action.

The illustrations in I Need Space by John Corby are so cute and bring Rocco’s epic journey across the universe to life. Each encounter highlights the little hiccups that frustrate Rocco, making his growing frustration easy for young readers to recognize and understand.

One of my favorite things about this book is that it doesn’t stop at showing Rocco getting overwhelmed. It also gives children practical tips for taking a breath and managing those big feelings. I Need Space is a great way to introduce kids to emotional regulation while reminding them that taking time alone isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes, a little space is exactly what you need to feel better.
