Agatha All Along Show Review and Theories!
Agatha All Along brings Marvel fans a fun, campy spin on the world of witches, with just enough creepy horror elements to keep you on edge. The show delivers a mix of dark magic, quirky humor, and a touch of gothic mystery, all wrapped up in a story that keeps you guessing. In this review, we’ll break down what makes the Agatha All Along show so entertaining and dive into some of the fan theories that are already gaining traction.
I was able to view the first four episodes of Agatha All Along via a screener provided by Disney. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Agatha All Along Plot
In the show Agatha All Along, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) finds herself powerless after the events of WandaVision, trapped in a recurring true crime mini-series. Her journey turns unexpectedly when a mysterious goth she dubs “Teen” (Joe Locke) appears and breaks her free from Wanda’s spell that had bound her. This Teen, with an unknown past and motive, intrigues Agatha, who realizes that a powerful spell has enabled him to hide his past from other witches. Teen pleads with her to guide him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a perilous magical journey filled with trials that, if completed, give incredible power to any witch that survives.
Seeing an opportunity to restore her magic, Agatha agrees. The two form an unlikely alliance, gathering a coven of local witches (the hilarious Debra Rupp, Patti Lupone, Sasheer Zamata and Ali Ahn) to help them along the way. As they descend onto the Witches’ Road, Agatha and her newfound allies face a series of daunting challenges—each more dangerous than the last.
Review
I really enjoyed Agatha All Along and feel it’s one of the best Marvel series since WandaVision. For Agatha, the Witches’ Road offers not only a chance to reclaim her power but also to uncover deeper secrets about magic and her own place in the supernatural world. It’s really hard not to root for her. She is petty (she spits on the old foundation that Wanda cries at in WandaVision) she tends to trick anyone who gets near her plus we get some background information that wasn’t revealed before. For example, I was surprised that Agatha’s son is mentioned several times and her mysterious relationship with fellow witch Rio is fascinating since viewers can easily see that they have a more than likely romantic history.
Agatha All Along’s main character is played by Kathryn Hahn and honestly, she is the heart of this show. She sells Agatha’s lust for power in every single scene. She plays Agatha as a campy yet determined Marvel witch and the series showcases her comedic side really well. Aubrey Plaza plays her role quite well and she has amazing chemistry with Katharine Hahn. I also enjoyed Patti Lupone as the clairvoyant of Agatha’s new coven and the innocence that Debra Jo Rupp as Mrs. Hart brings to the series. In fact, everyone seems perfectly cast plus there are several familiar faces that return from the WandaVision series.
I also liked the horror aspect of this series. Marvel doesn’t do horror often but when it does in projects like Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Werewolf by Night it is done very well. The special effects of the seven are creepy and there’s a scene right out of the Ring that adds a horror element to the show.
Speaking of WandaVision, I highly recommend a viewing of WandaVision and Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness before starting Agatha All Along. Viewers who don’t will frankly miss the fun Easter Eggs that are sprinkled throughout the show.
My favorite Easter Eggs are as follows:
- The series opens with Agatha playing a woman named Agnes while trapped in Wanda’s spell. She’s a small-town detective in the same vein as Mare of Easttown, in fact, her show is called Agnes of Westview and the accents in both actresses are similar.
- Take note of the fingertips on the body that Agnes observes in the first episode. They are dark colored similar to Wanda’s when she uses the Darkhold.
- Notice the name of Agatha’s rabbit (Señor Scratch) in the second episode. In the comics, Agatha’s has a son named Nicholas Scratch.
Agatha All Along Theories
Agatha All Along matches the intricacies of the set design that WandaVision bestowed on Marvel fans. The Witches’ Road is beautifully designed and lit as are the houses where each witch has their trial. It’s really important to know that when watching a Marvel show, the background gives just as much information as the plot and characters themselves, so make sure to pay attention to set pieces.
For instance, Agatha’s rabbit “Señor Scratch” makes an appearance in the show as do several rabbit statues when “Agnes” is walking throughout her house. Marvel fans know that Agatha has a canon son named Nicholas in the comics and many are theorizing that the rabbit is Nicholas himself, trapped in animal form because Agatha sacrificed him at some point to obtain the Darkhold.
It could be that the rabbit is simply Agatha’s pet and that Nicholas Scratch is actually “Teen” who is looking to walk the Witches’ Road to obtain the power to match his mother’s power.
Other theories suggest that Teen is actually Wanda and Vision’s son Billy. A cool plot point is that when Agatha is awakened from Wanda’s spell, she grills the Teen to try to find out who he really is but whenever he answers her questions about his origin, Agatha cannot hear his answer. Could it be that Wanda put a spell on her children so that they would be hidden from her remaining enemies?
