Prince of Song & Sea Review

In Prince of Song & Sea, Disney Publishing launches a brand new series featuring some of our favorite Disney princes! The first release is Prince of Song & Sea by Linsey Miller. Set two days before Prince Eric sets sail to find a mysterious island and the key to his mother’s death, this book is an entertaining companion to the movie The Little Mermaid!

Prince Eric of Vellona struggles to love life under the shadow of the Vellonan crown and with the information that he has been cursed. As his mother reminded him before her death, if Eric is to kiss someone that isn’t his true love, he will die.

Determined to get answers he sets sail to the Isle of Serein where he knows he will either find true love or kill a wicked sea witch who wreaks havoc on people with her magic. When his ship crashes, Eric is saved by a mysterious woman he knows as “Pearl.” Unsure of his feelings, Eric is determined to break the curse even if it means that he might lose his love forever.

Prince of Song & Sea is that rare Disney book that expertly integrates a new story to an existing Disney fairytale. Prince Eric’s point of view while he interacts with Ariel or “Pearl” was my favorite part of the story. I also loved that the book explored Eric’s feelings towards his mother and being in charge of an entire kingdom where things aren’t as perfect as they appear.

Familiar faces show up in Prince of Song & Sea and the dinner table scene in the movie is recreated here from Eric’s perspective as he dines with a strange woman who carefully avoids eating seafood.

I’d be remiss not to mention the beautiful cover of this book which captures the fantasy and magic of Eric and Ariel’s story. Filled with adventure and nostalgia, Prince of Song & Sea is an excellent start to this new Disney series!
