In Millie Fleur’s Worst Day Ever , the town of Garden Glen is buzzing with excitement for the annual Butterbloom Fest, but Millie Fleur La Fae isn’t feeling the excitement. She wakes up with a case of the morgenmuffels, a humbug tangled in her hair, and a day that seems determined to go wrong. As she tries to make the most of the festival, nothing goes quite as planned, and her frustration continues to grow.

One of the things I love about this book is how Millie’s experience becomes a metaphor for those days when you’re just off. Millie has always been different from the other residents of Garden Glen, from her unusual garden to the things she enters in the festival. But even when she puts her heart into something, it doesn’t mean everything will work out the way she hopes. And when one thing after another goes wrong, it’s easy to let that frustration take over.

I think that’s such a relatable message for kids. Sometimes, when we’re having a bad day, we get caught up in everything that’s going wrong and forget that we can take a breath, reset, and try again. Millie learns that spending time with supportive friends can help shift her perspective, and that lesson applies to so much more than a disappointing day at a festival. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to work through every difficult feeling alone.

As with the previous Millie Fleur books, the illustrations in Millie Fleur’s Worst Day Ever are absolutely lovely. There are so many little details tucked into each page that make this a fun book to revisit, and the whimsical artwork really complements Millie’s wonderfully unusual world.

Millie Fleur’s Worst Day Ever is a charming story about friendship, frustration, and giving yourself permission to have a bad day. It’s a great choice for kids who sometimes struggle when things don’t go according to plan, with a gentle reminder that a little time, a fresh perspective, and good friends can make a difference.
