Heart of the Moors by Holly Black is a fantasy book set in the world of Disney’s Maleficent. The story takes place between the events of the two Maleficent movies and focuses on Aurora, the newly crowned Queen of the Moors, as she navigates her new role and responsibilities.
In this tale, Aurora is trying to maintain peace between the human kingdom and the magical creatures of the Moors, but tensions run high. She also struggles with balancing her love for Prince Phillip and her bond with Maleficent, her fairy godmother. Aurora’s journey involves dealing with political intrigue, friendship, and her own sense of identity.
The book is aimed at younger readers, with themes of trust, love, and finding one’s place in a complicated world. It fits well for tweens who enjoy magical adventures with characters they know from the Maleficent movies.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the second of Disney’s Maleficent books to read this Halloween and it’s the adaptation of the movie. The book version of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil closely follows the storyline of the movie. It retells the plot where Aurora, now Queen of the Moors, is about to marry Prince Phillip, which should unite the human kingdom and the magical creatures of the Moors. However, Queen Ingrith, Phillip’s mother, has other plans and secretly plots to create division and war between humans and magical beings.
The book explores Maleficent’s struggle with her relationship with Aurora, as misunderstandings make Aurora question whether Maleficent is truly evil. As Maleficent learns more about her own kind, she faces a pivotal choice—whether to join a war against humanity or try to protect both worlds.
The book dives into themes of love, loyalty, prejudice, and self-discovery, making it an engaging read for tweens and fans of the Maleficent movies.
