The Sixth Sense

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, The Sixth Sense, starring Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, and Toni Collette, remains one of the most memorable psychological thrillers ever made, known for its jaw-dropping twist and six Oscar® nominations.

The Sixth Sense is more than just a thriller, it’s a deeply emotional film about letting go and finding peace. While there are plenty of unsettling moments, like the iconic scene where the mom played by Toni Collette is terrified by all the drawers and cabinets suddenly being open, the heart of the story is about accepting loss.

Donnie Wahlberg makes a nearly unrecognizable cameo as one of Bruce Willis’ troubled clients, marking his return to film in a surprising way. The movie’s shocking twist—that Bruce Willis’ character is unalive the entire time—is brilliantly handled. Little clues are scattered throughout the film, and with each rewatch, more of them come to light, making the twist even more satisfying. Overall, The Sixth Sense is a masterful mix of suspense and emotion.

Signs

Shyamalan’s sci-fi cult classic, Signs, features Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, and Rory Culkin in a suspenseful film about a farmer investigating the mystery behind some strange crop circles. Signs, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, is an entertaining movie that mixes suspense with deeper themes of grief and faith. Though it’s often labeled as a horror film, it’s more about how people deal with loss, grief, and an unknown threat.

The close-up shots in the cornfields are incredibly effective, bringing a really spooky atmosphere to the rural setting where the film is set. The real tension in Signs comes from the anticipation of something lurking just out of sight—many of the scariest scenes don’t even show an alien. Instead, it’s the unknown sounds and fear of an attack that keep you (and the characters!) on edge.

Joaquin Phoenix delivers a standout performance as the brother of Mel Gibson’s character, bringing emotion and intensity to the role. Shyamalan himself makes a creepy cameo as a neighbor who has a terrifying encounter with an alien, which adds to the overall unsettling vibe of the film. Ultimately, Signs is more than just a thriller—it’s a thoughtful movie with heart.
